R1 et kernels différents

Сообщение altadeos » 28 июн 2013, 15:55

Bonjour,

Hi,

sorry for used language, but I prefer writing in english, surelly my google translated french would be worse...

In the SRPMs that I prepare for ROSA & OM there are chances to prepare also many different pae flavours:
kernel-nrj-desktop-pae, kernel-nrj-laptop-pae, kernel-nrj-realtime-pae, but not only, some cpu optimized
kernel-nrj-desktop-core2-pae (optimized for Intel Core 2 and greater)

We can NOT build all those kernel for the reason that to build only one kernel requires from 75 to 120 mins:
if i put to build more than usual 5 flavours, I would risk to have the build task stopped by a 12hrs time limit

if you need a specific kernel, you can ask me in the usually place were we discuss about kernel: MIB Forum
or you can ask me here, then let me know somewhat by a msg, or by email, like sylvainjsc made this time.

I can fork srpm and prepare the one you need using a folder for you, example kernel_38x_by_user_request

Let me know which kernel and from which serie (3.8, 3.9, 3.10), for example you need nrj-laptop-pae 3.8.13?
After few hours you'll find your kernel_by_request, then I'll inform you about the path where to download it...

bye, NicCo

Hello NicCo,

English is not a problem don't worry.
I'am trying to have my backlight working with Rosa R1 64bits. With the old kernel of Rosa Fresh i need to put on the grub line acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor.
With Rosa fresh R1 64bits it does'nt work and i'am trying to identify where is the problem.
With the x86 kernel it work before updates. After it's the same it does'nt work.

Do you know where i can find informations about kernels like differences between desktop and laptop kernels,... to identify what kernel is the most appropriate for me?
Just a question: is there a technical problem to build only pae kernels for x86 flavours? It can make work more easy cant' it?

Thank you again for the time you take to answer me.
Best regards.

Rom1.

For a laptop PC, kernel-nrj-laptop is the best, because:
laptop is 300Hz (not 1000Hz like desktop) so it use less energy, cooler cpu and better battery lasting, better suspend functions, ecc...
but apart the scheduler freq (HZ) there are many other specific laptop key values, that make -laptop flavour better for the laptops PCs

To enable PAE for all the 32bit kernel as predefined feature?
It's not a safe thing enable PAE for all 32bit kernel because:
there are around some widespread 32bit cpu, like for example Pentium M that can NOT run at all with a pae kernel, so for those PC would be absolutely impossible run any ROSA OS...

If with old ROSA Fresh (that was equipped with kernel 3.6.10) you have the solution for the backlight, I can prepare for you latest kernel 3.6.11:
nrj-laptop and with pae full enabled and also nrjQL-laptop with pae: you may have the working backlight, and all your ram can be used properly

Thanks NicCo for your useful and friendly help ;)

It would also be kind to open a bug on bugzilla if there is a real behavior difference between 32 and 64 kernel

sylvainsjc писал(а):It would also be kind to open a bug on bugzilla if there is a real behavior difference between 32 and 64 kernel
It's useless, 32 and 64 bit have the same configs, there is nothing to fix:
32bit can manage a maximum 32bit amount of ram that is around 3Gb,
only the PAE mode can enable proper feature (not working for all 32bit)

Sometimes for some nor working functions like a NOT compatible backlight feature, may be necessary a specific patch for that laptop model, but this patch must exists by the laptop vendor..., if you suggest us that patch, we can add to any ROSA kernel and prepare a proper rebuild for the user

altadeos писал(а):With the x86 kernel it work before updates. After it's the same it does'nt work.
It seems like ROSA Fresh equipped with kernel 3.6.10 have backlight working with "acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor",
then with the updated kernel 3.8 series, even if using the command above, this workaround don't make his backlight working

It's possible, like above I explained to him in my msg, prepare an updated version of kernel 3.6 serie, 3.6.11:
this with laptop profile, pae, and also some updated patches...

Really thanks for the answer.
I would like to test with a 3.6.11 nrj laptop kernel x86_64.
Perhaps the acpi function have changed in 3.8.
I will also test with another distribution to find if the problem is on all 3.8 kernels or only on Rosa and other distributions.

All informations you gave me are really usefull!
Thanks.

Can you please tell me what i need to do to have a kernel 3.6.11?

Actually,
for ROSA Linux, you can use all kernels from 3.0 to 3.10

That is well explained here >>> http://forum.rosalab.ru/en/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1223
Here are the paths of different kernels for MDV2011, RM2012, ROSA2012.1
kernels 3.0.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.1.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.2.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.3.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.4.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.5.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.6.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.7.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.8.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.9.xx >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
kernels 3.10.x >>> http://abf.rosalinux.ru/downloads/kerne ... epository/
so, it's easy prepare a command to add one repo for a specific kernel serie,
for example, this command below is for kernel 3.6 and ROSA 2012.1 x86_64

# urpmi.addmedia Kernel_36x http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/kernels_36x_personal/repository/rosa2012.1/x86_64/main/release/
then you can install all kernel from 3.6 series, to install kernel-nrj-laptop
(the last kernel for 3.6 is 3.6.11 (EOL) version)

# urpmi kernel-nrj-laptop-devel-latest kernel-nrj-laptop-latest
or to install a laptop from nrjQL, that can be done also concurrently...

# urpmi kernel-nrjQL-laptop-devel-latest kernel-nrjQL-laptop-latest

other example? this command below is for kernel 3.7 and ROSA 2012.1 x86_64

# urpmi.addmedia Kernel_37x http://abf-downloads.rosalinux.ru/kernels_37x_personal/repository/rosa2012.1/x86_64/main/release/
then you can install all kernel from 3.7 series, to install kernel-nrj-laptop
(the last kernel for 3.7 is 3.7.10 (EOL) version)

# urpmi kernel-nrj-laptop-devel-latest kernel-nrj-laptop-latest
or to install a laptop from nrjQL, that can be done also concurrently...

# urpmi kernel-nrjQL-laptop-devel-latest kernel-nrjQL-laptop-latest

Too many unused kernels? You need to remove some of them?
To uninstall a kernel is easy, for example to remove nrj-laptop.3.6.11, you can use

# urpme -a kernel-nrj-laptop-devel-3.6.11 kernel-nrj-laptop-3.6.11
to uninstall nrj-laptop.3.7.10, you can use

# urpme -a kernel-nrj-laptop-devel-3.7.10 kernel-nrj-laptop-3.7.10

bye, NicCo
